Gagosian is pleased to present Tramonto Spaventoso. An exhibition by Albert Oehlen including the second part of his version of the Rothko Chapel in Houston. As well as other new paints. The first part of the project. Comprised of four paintings that reflect the imposing scale of the Color Field compositions in the Chapel while contrasting Rothko’s contemplativity with their frenzied energy – was on display at the Serpentine Galleries, London, in 2019-2020. The two parts make up the work Tramonto Spaventoso (2019-2020).

Oehlen uses abstract, figurative and glued elements to disrupt the stories and conventions of modern painting. By adding improvised components. He discovers ever new possibilities for the genre. While championing “bad” amateur painting, Oehlen continues to infuse the expressive gesture. A surrealist attitude, openly denigrating the quest for a reliable form and a stable meaning.
