Andro Wekua
Visual Artist
Location: Berlin (Germany)

Originally from Georgia, a country of the former USSR that he had to flee as a child, Andro Wekua retains traces of it in his work. His life-size wax figures seem to protect themselves from the outside world with the richness of their most intimate thoughts, while his paintings evoke the avant-garde of the early 20th century, and his models are memories of the communist architecture of his past.

Installations.

Andro Wekua’s paintings, sculptures, collages, and drawings are often articulated in the form of installations, like staged scenes, echoing mental spaces. This inner world is inhabited by characters taken from advertising or personal sources, with forgotten, reclusive, motionless, or silent faces. Geometric shapes obstructing an image, garish or dark colors, sensual and fragile materials: a confusion of feelings reigns, somewhere between seduction and melancholy.
