German artists emerging after 1960 explored the postwar landscape. Situated between a recent disaster and growing prosperity. With a combination of skepticism, uncertainty and enthusiasm for a fresh start. This exhibition features unique artist galleries dedicated to leading German artists such as Georg Baselitz. Anselm Kiefer. Imi Knoebel. Sigmar Polke and Gerhard Richter. Showing the breadth of entire careers or important artistic phases. The installation offers unprecedented insight into the development of these artists.

German art after 1960 is the result of an innovative partnership established in 2009 between the Doris and Donald Fisher collection and the San Francisco Museum of Museum Art. The galleries present common strengths. And the complementarity of our funds through presentations that mix works of art from Fishers with pieces from the museum’s collection and sometimes from other lenders.
