I love LA and LA loves me: Joseph Beuys at 100

On May 12, 2021, fans around the world celebrated what would have been the 100th birthday of artist Joseph Beuys. In the German state of Nordrhein-Westfalen, where Beuys was born in 1921 and died in 1986, artistic organizations, large and small, organize exhibitions and programs that pay homage to Beuys’ work as an artist. Educator and agitator deeply committed to what he called social sculpture. The idea that the greatest purpose of art is to function as a vehicle for political engagement and social healing.
I Like America and America Likes Me.
Organized by art historian Andrea Gyorody. I Like LA and LA Likes Me: Joseph Beuys at 100 explores Beuys’ legacy in relation to related work being done today in Los Angeles. Beuys came to the United States twice in 1974. He lectured in New York. Minneapolis and Chicago. He returned to New York later that year to direct the performances: I Like America and America Likes Me. Then, he lived in a gallery for several days with a coyote. Although Beuys never made it to California, his work is well represented in Los Angeles. Mainly through its multiple edited objects. His works on paper that Beuys conceived as vehicles to disseminate his ideas as widely as possible.
