This large, investigative exhibition celebrates the powerful work of Joy Hester. Unique figure of 20th century Australian art.

Joy Hester produced some of the most distinctive images. And the most intriguing that emerged in Australia in the 1940s and 1950s. Working almost exclusively with brush and ink. She focused on the powerful expressions of the human figure. Using drawing as a vehicle to capture life in all its complexity.

The exhibition traces the progression of Hester’s artistic interests. His formative works responding to the oppressive climate of the Second World War. Has convincing psychological portraits. Later intimate images of faces and lovers taken shortly before his untimely death in 1960. Hester was not afraid to explore subjects considered very provocative during his lifetime. Love. Sex. Birth and death. Themes that are found throughout the exhibition. Joy Hester: “Remember Me” brings together important works from public and private collections. We see many drawings that had never been exhibited to the public. The exhibition offers a new insight into working methods. As well as the creative processes developed by Hester early in his career.
