Galeria Nara Roesler – Until April 23, 2022 New York (US)

Nara Roesler New York is pleased to announce the first solo exhibition of Brazilian artist Marcelo Silveira (1962), in the United States. The exhibition is organized by Moacir dos Anjos, who notably organized the 29th São Paulo Biennial and the 30th Panorama of Brazilian Art, the two most important exhibitions of contemporary art in Brazil.

2005 to 2021.

The presentation brings together works from different periods of the artist’s work (ranging from 2005 to 2021). With special emphasis on his practice with Cajacatinga. A native wood from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. In Pernambuco, where the artist lives and works. This wood has been extensively logged in open land for the cultivation of sugar cane, and is now nearly extinct. Most of it remains only roots, themselves burned successively during seasonal fires. Silveira collects these fragments, creating works that give the remains new forms and new purposes. The exhibition also presents recent collages from the Hotel Solidão series, created from images taken from old magazines from the 1950s.

Cajacatinga wood.

In series such as the Manuais de Liêdo and Peles, Silveira studies the characteristics of cajacatinga wood. Test the limits of its plasticity, sculpt it. Wears it down and creates lines of resistance on its surface. He then organizes the sculptures in different configurations, sometimes in relief, hung or supported on the walls. Other times, placed on the ground as if emerging, as in De natureza viva; or alternatively, suspended from the ceiling, as in Pêndulo and Aérea.
