The three artists selected for the ninth program of the Biennial of the Arts of the Great Rivers. Kahlil Robert Irving. Tim Portlock and Rachel Youn. Have offered kinetic sculpture exhibitions. The installation. Ceramics and digital prints. The winners were chosen by a jury of eminent jurors after individual studio visits with ten semi-finalists. More than 80 artists have applied for the Biennale des Grands Rivières (GRB). A collaborative initiative between CAM and the Gateway Foundation. Designed to recognize the artistic talents of the greater Saint-Louis metropolitan area. Generously funded by the Gateway Foundation, GRB awards each artist $ 20,000 and a major exhibition in major CAM galleries.

Tim Portlock’s art focuses on the divergence between idealism and American exceptionalism. The lived realities of contemporary American cities with declining populations. It contrasts the ravaged buildings of cities like Saint-Louis. Camden. New Jersey and San Bernardino with idealism articulated through the conventions of 19th century American landscape painting.

Rachel Youn.

Rachel Youn sources materials and objects from interior design stores. Hours of flea market online on Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace. In the workshop, these objects are transformed into often awkward kinetic pieces. Erotic and absurd. She plays with the relationship between manufactured products and spirituality.

Kahlil Robert.

Kahlil Robert Irving observes how materials and emotions are linked. Existing simultaneously as static / dynamic. Heavy, light. Political / anarchic. Old / new.
