Shirin Neshat (b.1957, Qazvin, Iran) completed her studies in the United States in 1974. Five years later, the Islamic Revolution prevented her from returning to her home country for almost twenty years. Her personal experiences as a Muslim woman in exile informed her practice in which she uses photography. Video installation. Cinema and performance to explore the political structures that have shaped Iranian history. And other countries in the Middle East. Neshat portrays the alienation of women in repressive Muslim societies. Questioning the role reserved for women in Islamic value systems. In her practice, she uses poetic imagery. Thus, it addresses the themes of gender and society. Of the individual and the collective. The dialectical relationship between past and present. All this, through the prism of his experiences of belonging and exile.

Steen Doessing

Steen Doessing
Photographer

Location: United Kingdom

Born and raised in Denmark, Steen Doessing grew up surrounded by water. The ocean, lakes and rivers were everywhere he looked. His senses were filled with the smell, sound and visual impression of water. Water represents life for Steen. The equanimity and the power of nature. Water is where it comes from. His fascination with water is endless. He can sit on the shore for hours without taking a single photo and just take to the sea.

For many, his work represents a state of tranquility, zen, calm but also drama. He is often asked if this is who he is. If his art is a way of escaping from something else. His answer is that this state is something he celebrates. A state of harmony and balance. A state of balance!

Sometimes hours.

Using long exposures, sometimes hours. It captures a slow motion sequence of movements. Seemingly endless changes around static objects. And let those elements blend into one visual plane. It is the graphic representation of determination. The resilience of these static objects in the face of the gentle but powerful calm of their environment which for him means balance.

For Steen, photography is a visual medium that offers the opportunity to express the way he sees and feels things around him.

His work is greatly influenced by his environment which throughout his life has been encompassed by water. He hopes his love for the privacy and beauty inherent in the intrinsic landscape that immediately surrounds us, whether urban or rural, is evident in his work.

Matt Henry

Matt Henry

Matt Henry
Photographer
Location: Brighton (UK)

Matt Henry makes fictional stories set in the middle of the century. The stories include a sequence of photographs. Staged through sets and dressed places. Each is scripted and typically features a cast of artist-led actors. Henry’s production process shares other elements with traditional filmmaking. In particular the cast. Tracking. Lighting / scenography. Accessories and costumes, as well as the use of period hairstyle and makeup. The work has been described as “stills from a film that was never made.” He is inspired by melodrama, absurdism and surrealism.

60s.

Henry’s Tales explore his fascination with the mid-century period, and present recurring interests. Notably: the 1960s as an unresolved political flashpoint. Counterculture, psychedelics and social change. Dream states and visions of utopia / dystopia. As well as racial and gender inequalities. Rather than seeing this period as a static historical artefact to be viewed from a present lens. Henry’s fictions explore the past and present using this era as a kind of historical mirror that changes shape.

Matt Henry (born 1978) grew up in the hills of North Wales and is now based in Brighton, England. He studied BA Politics (Univ. De Nottingham) and MA Photography (Univ. De Brighton).
