Forty photographs of his expansive work over the past forty years. Presenting essential documentation of avant-garde performance. And queer liberation scenes in New York in the 80s and 90s. Human in situ portraits of people with cognitive disabilities. Cloistered nuns. Hot walkers at the running track. Appalachians, and farmers. As well as bright photos of horses, oxen, goats.
In the mid-1970s. McAdams was inspired by her friendship with civil rights icon Harvey Milk to use her camera to encourage social change. She photographed the “NEA Four”. Performance artists whose work became the center of curatorial outrage in the early 1990s. Images from this series are included in the exhibition. So are McAdams’ photographs of the anti-nuclear protests. AIDS activism, people living with mental illness. The nuns of St. Mary’s Convent. Workers working on a Saratoga Springs race track. There are also active farm animals.
After an exhibition at BMAC from June 22 to September 23, “Dona Ann McAdams: Performative Acts” will visit Vermont until November 2020. Visiting the Bank Gallery at Castleton University in Rutland. Catamount Arts in St. Johnsbury and Helen Day Art Center in Stowe.
