Ursula von Rydingsvard
Sculptor, Installation
Location : Germany
Ursula von Rydingsvard (American, born 1942 in Deensen, Germany). She studied painting at the University of Miami, Coral Gables. Then she obtained a Masters of Fine Arts from Columbia University in 1975. The artist’s large-scale sculptures reveal traces of the human hand. Which suggest the earliest memories of being surrounded by wooden walls. Tools and utensils as a child living in wartime refugee and labor camps in Germany. After her family was forced to leave Poland. Von Rydingsvard creates his work from commercially machined cedar beams that are marked. Shaped by cuts in wood. Stacked, then glued together. These shapes can also be used for casting sculptures. In materials such as urethane resin. Copper and bronze. Von Rydingsvard’s organic and gestural works allude to the landscape. To the body and common utility items such as spoons, shovels and bowls.
