Chagall, Modigliani, Soutine… School of Paris, 1905-1940
Museum of Art and History of Judaism – Until October 31, 2021 Paris (France)
The School of Paris designates the artistic scene made up of foreign artists from all over Europe. But also from the Americas, Asia and Africa. This cosmopolitanism was unprecedented in the history of art.
Many of these men and women were Jewish artists from major European cities. From the Russian Empire in search of artistic, social and religious emancipation. They were not a “school” in the traditional sense of the term since they did not have a common style. However, on the contrary, they shared a story. An ideal and, for some, the same fate.
The Museum of Art and History of Judaism is dedicating an exhibition to this generation of artists who arrived in Paris between 1904 and 1914 and their destinies. He will explore the reasons for their installation there. The special ties that unite them. The historical and political context of their work. Also, their participation in the artistic scene in what was then the capital of modern art.
