Katherine Bradford
Painter
Location: New York (US)
Katherine Bradford is a contemporary American artist known for her luminous paintings that merge abstraction and figurative motifs. Referring to outer space, to Superman. As well as the nocturnal paintings of Albert Pinkham Ryder and the brilliant colors of Mark Rothko. Bradford constructs its surfaces in thin washes that absorb and emanate light with eerie beauty. “What interests me the most is the language of painting. How people are able to say things with paint, ”she reflected. “When I first moved to Maine, I could see scenes from Marsden Hartley. They were everywhere. Yet I was also aware of what Hartley had done to the clouds, for example, to make them their own: those living, wonderful clouds. Born in 1942 in New York, NY, she attended Bryn Mawr College. She then got her MFA from SUNY Purchase. The artist currently divides his time between Brooklyn, NY and Brunswick, ME. Today, Bradford’s works are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Smith College Museum in Maine, the Worcester Museum of Art, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, among others.
